ArtistShare Flow Project album "NEXUS" -- I feel like the last spurt of Winter is on, much like the last spurt of writing for my Flow Project album "NEXUS." As of this newsletter, I have written 8 songs, finishing up a 9th, and looking to write another 3 or so. My husband has promised to write me a song as well which I'm really excited to hear what he comes up with. Of the songs written, they are all in various levels of completion, some with lyrics and some without, and some completely programmed and ready to go in the studios while others are either awaiting their metamorphosis in the studio with live musicians or in talks with various producers/arrangers/musicians to liven them up.
I have many blogs and home demos up for my Flow Project participants to check out -- just log into your account and you can check out the inner workings of the project as it's developing as well as download demos for your listening pleasure (or confusion!). Just keep in mind, these are demos and I'm not spending a lot of time to brush up the vocal pitch and performance, getting the right effect, certainly no bvs or vocal arrangements to speak of -- just getting ideas down to get the idea of the song across (not the arrangement or production) and develop from there. Many people have always commented from my past recordings how the final product is completely different and more polished than the demos, and I believe that's how it should be, not only for the element of surprise but also to allow stretching room in the studio for the musicians as well as for ideas to flourish, as well as for that magic that inevitably happens during the recordings. For those in the creative field who are curious to see how projects come together, this might be of particular interest to you. If I get enough people asking for my chart scribblings which are the notes I take while composing, I'll be happy to post them as well; it doesn't make much sense to anyone but myself I think. I will of course upload the finished charts and lyrics.
We also JUST finished shooting for the album jacket. I will not be uploading the pictures from the shoot until we have a clear idea of what we're going to do and decide on the cover artwork, but rest assured the shots came out beautifully. Takashi Matsuzaki again did the make-up and photography, with Natsuko Hayashi assisting and lending her amazing jewelry designs from her Okustan line.
And for those who have yet to buy any of the various packages available that will allow you a birds eye view to the project as well as the "Alternate Routes" remix album and "NEXUS" once it is complete, it's never too late. Just go to the following links below for the download, CD by mail delivery, or other package options:

And for those looking for something extra, such as my Flow Vocal Participant Package which includes vocal lessons, tips, and will also include a karaoke version of the songs from NEXUS, you can see an overview of the various packages available here:
Honestly, I'm slightly embarrassed to keep pushing these packages, but the truth of the matter is that the money raised from sales of these packages helps the budget and we're getting into the crunch now. Just last month, someone generously bought the Bronze Participant Package. Aside from the amazing support this person shows which is incredibly humbling and inspiring to me, on the economic front that sale alone makes a difference of being able to hire a musician for a track or even half a day in the studio, and helps to raise the bar of excellence I aim for each time I make an album. In these times, album sales have gotten to the point that even mainstream pop sellers such as Alicia Keys, who was #1 last week in Billboard with the top selling album, is showing sales just barely above 50,000 copies -- scary! At this rate, making albums will become obsolete for many artists, myself not withstanding. Can you imagine a world where only mainstream artists will be recording music which the record labels feel will help their bottom line and has probably little artistic integrity? A money driven industry can never create anything for the soul or something that is honest from the heart. Anyhow, doom and gloom aside, I'm confident that I'm making a wonderful album and hope that many of you will check it out. And for those who have already gotten the packages, thank you and I hope you're enjoying the ride! More coming in the months ahead! (I actually still have the video shots taken during our Indonesian tour and personal trip to Japan to edit, which I'm afraid I won't be able to get to until after the record is complete.)
Other News -- As reported in my last newsletter and previous blogs, I worked recently on a remake of the Stevie Wonder track "As" for my friend, Yasushi Ide, for a compilation he's putting together of Stevie tracks, to be released on his label Grand Gallery for the Japanese market. Other artists/producers involved are Ananda Project, Kenny Bobian, DJ Spinna, Richie Stephance, A Hundred Birds, Studio Apartment, AK, Chieko Kinbara and Yoko Ota. Obviously a house heavy crowd so you can get an idea of where the project is headed. It should be out in May 2008. For a listen to the finished track (pre-mastering), you can go to my myspace page where I've posted it for your listening pleasure:
A recent skype chat with Shinichi Osawa has led to another opportunity to do some background vocal arrangements, this time for the singer herself to sing, with a young artist he is current working with, Emi Tawata. You can check out her myspace page:
She has a lovely voice and the song is in classic Shin style with his undeniably tight arrangement and programming. More on that as I find out the release date and other information.
